Cricket nets and net lanes

We install, maintain and repair all cricket nets and cricket net lanes for sports halls and gymnasia. For outdoor cricket nets see Outside sports

Cricket nets, net lanes

We install cricket nets with retractable netting running on aluminium trackway or tensioned wire rope. We install

  • Single cricket net lanes with 2 alloy Spacespan track lengths 15-20m long (recommended) including track hangers and wall brackets, FreeRoll ball raced trackway runners, 2 wing nets 15-20m long, 1 back net and 1 roof net 3-3.6m wide in 50mm white nylon mesh, 2 wing net sight screens, 4.5m long x 2m high, 1 back net sight screen 2m high, 1 wall fixed storage pouch

  • Double cricket net lanes with 3alloy Spacespan track lengths 15-20m long (recommended) including track hangers and wall brackets, FreeRoll ball raced trackway runners, 3 wing nets 15-20m long, 2 back net and 2 roof net 3-3.6m wide in 50mm white nylon mesh, 3 wing net sight screens, 4.5m long x 2m high, 2 back net sight screens 2m high, 1 wall fixed storage pouch

  • Triple cricket net lanes with 4 alloy Spacespan track lengths 15-20m long (recommended) including track hangers and wall brackets, FreeRoll ball raced trackway runners, 4 wing nets 15-20m long, 3 back net and 3 roof net 3-3.6m wide in 50mm white nylon mesh, 4 wing net sight screens, 4.5m long x 2m high, 3 back net sight screens 2m high, 1 wall fixed storage pouch

Bowler's protection nets

We install bowlers end protection nets with retractable netting running on aluminium trackway or tensioned wire rope. We install

  • Nets running parallel to the end wall of a sports hall or gym either full width or half width
  • Net which link with the outer wing net of lane and which are connected with a 90 degree section of trackway

Storage

Nets should be properly stored to prevent them lying on the floor and becoming a trip hazard. We supply and install the following net storage systems

  • storage pouches for cricket net lanes (for the full width of the lane and fitted to a wall - these store the net lane against an end wall and are usually fitted with diagonal tie backs to hold the net back at the top)

  • storage basket for storing cricket net lanes overhead and keeping walls and playing areas clear (these are winched to the ceiling either with a manual or electric winch)

OG Technical - Cricket nets and net lanes

Track or supporting system
We use 3 methods of suspending nets

  • Aluminium trackway (recommended for indoor applications) or
  • Tensioned wire rope (recommended for outside but can be used inside too)
  • Steel frame or cage (recommended for outside)

Aluminium trackway
Our SpaceSpan aluminium trackway is a heavy duty extrusion intended for modern sports halls that will span up to 6m without support. The trackway is fixed to overhead beams or purlins by telescopic support brackets which are designed and manufactured to suit the requirements of each project. Wire rope supports can also be used where there are insufficient load bearing beams or purlins directly above the track enabling our trackway to be installed in virtually any position within a sports hall. We also supply cross overs to allow curtains to cross net lanes for example. With our trackway nets and screens can be positioned almost anywhere within a sports hall.

Our FreeRoll track runners are unique featuring ball bearings in each wheel. Compared to the plain bearings in most other systems this provides a much freer running net, less prone to jams and torn curtains or screens (often when a runner jams the momentum of the curtain being pulled out can result in the screen tearing or parting from the net). Nets are fixed to the runners with spring snaphooks to allow easy fitment but prevent the net coming off on its own.

Tensioned wire rope
A cost effective alternative to trackway, wire rope is tensioned across a hall or outside area to support nets or curtains. For spans exceeding 15m we recommend our double wire system with double nets as this reduces the weight and droop on each wire reducing the overall sagging effect.

For outside nets the wire headline normally is supported by steel or wood poles. The wood poles are simple to install and require guylines to tension the headline. These are simple but the lines are a potential trip hazard. The steel posts are concreted into sockets in the ground. These are more costly to install initially but are simpler to set up each time and are much neater without the hazards of supporting ropes.

Steel cage
Our steel frames comprise galvanised poles which fit into sockets concreted into the ground with galvanised elbow joints and hooks to attach the nets. These are relatively simple to install, allow roof nets to be easily fitted and are very durable.

Cricket net lane specifications

  • 50mm white nylon mesh, non flame retardant or flame retardant to BS5867 part 2 type B
  • White canvas sight screens 2m high, flame retardant to BS5867 part 2 type A
  • Each single bay comprises 2 wing nets, 1 roof net and 1 back net
  • Each double bay comprises 3 wing nets, 2 roof nets and 2 back nets
  • Roof nets are sewn into the wing nets so they retract as one unit to allow access to lights
  • Back nets are set in from the rear to provide protection for the back wall
  • Wing nets are manufactured to allow 150mm drape on the floor to gather balls and prevent travel outside the lane
  • All nets are manufactured oversize to allow them to hang properly
  • Sight screens are recommended across the back net and along the wing nets for 4.5m (7m for County standard - the screen adjacent to a side wall can be omitted)
  • Detachable sight screens are recommended to make cleaning easier
  • Length 15m min - 29.12m (33.12 max), width 3 - 3.6m (10' - 12') (4m max), height 7.6m (to ensure track is above minimum height for Badminton)
  • 1m gap between nets and walls should be provided
  • Bowler's end net recommended 8m long
  • Where 3.6m wide nets are required in a standard 4 badminton court hall ceiling mounted storage pouches may be required to prevent the nets hindering the basketball goal
